Samuel van Hoogstraten – The Illusionist

Art lecture on 6 May 2025, by Leonore van Sloten
Senior Curator of the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam

Standing in Rembrandt’s shadow is the unfortunate fate that befell many of his apprentices. Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678) is one of them, even though he experienced great (international) fame in his own time. Nowadays, he is mostly famous for the book he wrote on painting, because it gives us an insight into how Rembrandt thought about art. But what Van Hoogstraten’s own paintings and drawings look like, and how successful he was as an artist, is completely unknown to many. Museum Rembrandthuis initiated a project to restore his fame, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna joined as their partner with two consecutive exhibitions in the two museums.

Senior curator of the Rembrandthuis, Leonore van Sloten, will take you through the exhibition story and introduce you to Van Hoogstraten’s fascination with illusionistic art. The fact that his teacher Rembrandt sowed the seeds for this, of course, deserves special attention. And, for the occasion of this event, organised by Femmes d’Europe, Leonore will also highlight the friendship between Van Hoogstraten and a female artist, Margaretha van Godewijck.
